Region III DMORT's primary area of coverage includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. As of January 2017, the team is at approximately 86 members representing all disciplines and support personnel. Region III maintains relationships with the medical examiners' offices in each state and the District, and coroners in Pennsylvania. Team trainings are usually held at various locations within the Region in the spring and summer. The team has responded to the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania (from where our identifying phrase "Caretakers of Heroes" originated), and the crash of an Executive Air chartered aircraft in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Team members have assisted other teams in numerous other disasters, including the response to the Haitian earthquake. We provide subject matter experts for pre-deployments at events within the National Capital Region, such as the State of the Union Addresses and Presidential inaugurations. In addition, we have assisted in the development of the US Soldier Biological Chemical Command, Chemical Mass Fatality Guide. Team members are available for presentations to professional and civic organizations.
